Dad plays the uke!Sunday, April 11th 2010 12:26PM

Hi,

We have one of your CDs and my kids love the song What Kind Of Cat Are You. I've learned to play the ukulele so I can play songs for them and eventually teach them about music. My oldest daughter, 3 and a half, always asks me for What Kind Of Cat Are You lately. I was wondering if you would consider sharing the chords for that song? Thanks,

Sean

Hi Billy,

The story of Dominique, your long lost broken guitar being returned to you after seven years, brought a tear to my eye.  You see, Billy, the joy you bring to others will always double back to you - just like Dominique!

Shine on, my friend...

Pharaoh PharaohFriday, October 30th 2009 1:36PM

I am interested in having my first grade class sing Pharaoh Pharaoh for our Grandparents program. I was curious if there are any dance moves or hand motions I could teach to go along with the song...

Thank you for your interest and your request. Billy's video "Bangin' and Sangin'" has hand motions on it that go along with the song "Pharoah Pharoah." Email me, Anna, at office@billyjonas.com if you have any more questions about it.

Billy Jonas came to my elementary school. I don't remember how long ago it was but I'm in the 11th grade and I still remember a lot of his music till this day. And now that i have more knowledge of music, [I know that] he is a very talented musician.

Thanks for sharing the memory and the comment!

NocturnalSaturday, September 19th 2009 2:06AM

Hiya~

I work at the public library in Portland, OR, and we have some of Billy Jonas' tunes in our collection.  I'd love to teach the kids the song "Nocturnal" at a story time about nocturnal animals this Fall.  Would that be ok?  We could do a little display of Billy's stuff, so that people could check them out.

If this sounds kosher, would it be possible to get the chords/tab for this song?  I think the kids would really enjoy it, and I'd love to share some nighttime anti-fear for the Halloween time...

Thanks for considering,
Kri

Thanks for your interest in using Billy's song for such a great kids program at your library! Email me at office@billyjonas.com and I'd be glad to send you the chords for "Nocturnal".

Chart for "God Is In"Wednesday, June 17th 2009 6:03PM

Does anyone out there have a chart for Billy's tune, "God Is In" that they would share?

Michael / Asheville

Hey Michael. We have it here, and I'd be glad to send it to you.

Just rocked out at your family show in Jacksonville, FL, and had to buy this track in honor of my husband.  Great times--look forward to taking the children to another of your shows some day!  (They are still singing "Happy Accident" and my 2 yo keeps saying "Eyes Wide Open...")

For those unfamiliar with Billy's work, some of his cds are for "adult/general audiences" and some are for "family audiences." Each cd, and each show, has some indication of which category they belong in.

Just wanted to say that the first time I heard Zack's Walk is still as vivid in my mind as if I were experiencing it right now.  I can visualize all of little Zack's nocturnal wanderings and I keep praying that I will get to hear the earth go "HEEK, HEEK!" and the sky "BOOM, BOOM!"

License to Bang!!Tuesday, May 26th 2009 3:27PM

We just saw you at the Kerrville Folk Festival this weekend!!  Absolutely AMAZING!!  My 5 and 3 yr old couldn't stop singing EYES WIDE OPEN on the way home.....We forgot to pick up a License to Bang before we left and our 5yr old REALLY wanted one....anyway I can still get one for her?

We're so glad you enjoyed the show! Send your address to us at office@billyjonas.com and we'll be sure to send your daughter a license to bang!

Fun today in Carrboro, NCSaturday, April 25th 2009 2:44AM

My son and his first grade class had a blast at your concert today in Carrboro, NC. However, my son wished for some more of your older songs because he has memorized every one of them! In preparation for your show, he practiced a song that he made up about dogs to the tune of your "what kind of cat" song. Amazingly, you have a song called what kind of dog on on your new cd, lol. I am going to buy the cd and play it and surprise him.

AWESOME!!!Wednesday, April 22nd 2009 4:30PM

BILLY JONAS ROX! He came to my school today, and the songs and his humor was WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better than I thought! GO BILLY! :]

We just had the best shabbos ever!  Thanks for playing in Winston Salem.   Will you ever put out a cd with that type of theme?

Thanks for the positive feedback -- Billy loves participating musically in shabbat services. And yes, he does plan to record a cd of prayerful songs, both original ones and traditional ones but there is no date yet for when he'll do that.

Come to Colorado!  Our 2 year old is a huge fan, pulling out buckets of all sizes to play along with the 2 dvds we own.  We'd love to come to a concert, but it looks like the closest ones are in TX....Please put Colorado on your tour!

Glad to hear your two year old is already bangin' and sangin'. It is true that Billy is not scheduled to come to Colorado this year. However, if you know of a venue interested in bringing him to your area, please email office@billyjonas.com.

Re: Your children's show in May at the Folk Festival in Tucson.
Your show was everything I'd expected and MORE! I have a younger sister who is a rhythm and exercise teacher in Sydney, Australia.  She teaches 4 to 7 year olds.  In addition, she teaches NIA to adults (it is a mixture of yoga, tai-chi and folk rhythms -- many of African or Latin origin).
You may recall meeting me.  I WAS VERY HAPPY YOU CHOSE ME TO BEAT THE BIG DRUM/waste can.
It was great meeting you and I know my sister Jeannette  will enjoy your CD What Kind of Cat Are You? which you so kindly signed for her.
Best wishes and continued success in your endeavors.  Abrazos, Gloria

Any chance of posting guitar tab for songs from your studio albums? If not tab, song tunings and simple "chord letter over lyric" charts? And if not that - maybe just song tunings? If other fans have already figured it out - maybe a forum dedicated to posting and discussing them? Thanks!

Billy is working on compiling a songbook for print. In the meantime, if you need specific chords for an event, feel free to email me (office@billyjonas.com).

If there is an interest in a new discussion board for fans sharing Billy's songs, please let me know, and we'll create one.

Thanks!

Hey Billy! I Have been a BIG fan for around 7 years now and I am thrilled you are still playing shows! My 4-year old son's favorite song is "what Kind of Cat Are You". He listens to his album about 3 times a week! I never cared for family folk singers in the past but I have CERTAINLY found an exception with your music! Thanks allot for all of the music you've shared with us and I can't wait to see you (hopefully the next chance I get to take time off with my family... hint hint... THE SPRING).

Today God Is Inwas the theme of our church service. I had seen Billy perform, bought some tapes and CDs and given the God Is In lyrics to our Rev. Jack as a suggestion for a future service. He agreed and decided the time around Halloween would be appropriate and suggested we attend the service wearing costumes and/or masks.I prepared a PowerPoint presentation with a photograph for each line, many of which were images downloaded from Google Images and others were photographs I had taken. For example, I used a picture of a local porno shop for the line God is in a place that's near; sometimes it's just not so clear' which brought down the house. I'm proud to say that following the presentation there was applause -- not an easy feat in our congregation.Jack's sermon was titled God's Maskwith much coming from Anglican Bishop John A.T. Robinson's book Honest to God. He often referred to the lines in the song and after the service I was bombarded with questions about Billy. Thanks to Billy for giving us such a good Sunday.

The first time I saw Billy was as a part of the band "The Billy's" at the Black Mountain Folk Festival in 1990 or 1991.  I still have that very worn cassette tape, with its crinkled paper cover that I bought then and there with my very meager funds.  I was in college and just fell in love with the Billys and their message.  Billy- I am so happy that you are still out there making music and bringing smiles to children and parents everywhere.  Favorite quotes: "This is Billy & Bills House" "Georgy Porgy President Bush, kind and gentle needed a push, Congress said 'get off of your tush, pick a dictator we can squish'."

I have been a fan of Billy Jonas for several years, since first taking my daughter to one of his shows at the Childrens Theatre in Charlotte. Last nite we saw him perform at the new Imaginon theatre in Charlotte, it was a great show.
br /br /
br /br /Africa--I visited Tanzania and Kenya with my father when I was eighteen (1976) and have traveled in Asia, Central America and Europe. Americans who have not traveled to the "third world" are always in for a rude awakening.   We being "first world citizens" have more than we need and are for the most part completely unawares as to the "poverty" and lives of the underdeveloped nations. Not to be a pessimist, but it appears that, at least in this country, people are becoming more isloated and fearing of others. I hope that this is not a permanent trend and that things will change for the better. It is important for people like Billy who perform to audiences to keep the hope alive that we can all live in a more peaceful and equitable world. I was amused by his advice and observations about travelling in Mali. Many years ago, I read a book called Jupiter's travels, the guy rode a motorcycle around the world and it his story of that adventure. There is a description of a performer who having found out that there was no toilet paper use in    northern africa found out  however they did wash themsevles with water very well. He was no longer able to keep a straight face when performing back in the "first world" e.g., London  because when he looked at at his audience he realized that most of them had poop on their anuses....sorry for this bit but that perhaps sums up our "differences" than those less fortunate and living in the "third world".  So whether it is your left hand or right hand...you can always wash your hands here in the developed world. The undeveloped world needs basic infrastructure to make lives better....all the medicine and volunteer help and programs are important but more needs to be done in providing infrastructure...I could go on from there. At any rate that  is my two cents worth. Keep on Banging and Sangin. PS I have a set of poems(lyrics), mostly sad about grief and loss, but some just silly and fun, that really need a good musician. If anybody is interested my email is in the link below.

LucyFriday, January 20th 2006 10:18PM

I was so exited upon learning that Billy was heading off to Mali to travel and study. Having also traveled to West Africa (Ghana) and recalling my own experiences, Ive been curious and wondered if others have also traveled to Africa, and what their impressions were. br / Traveling to Ghana was truly a remarkable experience that has left a lasting imprint on my consciousness. I dont think anyone can go there (Africa) and leave untouched. I had always considered myself a global thinker, and had long dreamed of traveling to Africa, in a sense to recall the ancient evolutionary history of our ancestors (I love Billys song, Life so far!). I loved being in Ghana and experiencing an entirely different perspective of living. The sights, scents, and sounds were vibrant as were the warm smiles and kindness from complete strangers. br / However, what I encountered in Ghana wasnt all the romantic notions of Africa I had held before traveling there. As a westerner from one of the most privileged, developed and indulgent countries on this planet, I was in no way prepared for the reality that was and is Africa. It was both amazing and heartbreaking at the same time, conjuring a variety of emotions Ive had to grapple with. I found it at first difficult to return to the United States and resume my normal routine. br / Two years later, feelings still surface, which cause me to acknowledge the fact that my actions as an American citizen (making consumer and political choices) affect others in a real and profound way. Without realizing it, I now recognize that I had been living in an isolated bubble, untouched and unscathed by the realities and living conditions of others around the world  even though I had considered myself to be aware! Needless to say, I was in for a rude awakening when that bubble burst! But Im glad and forever grateful it did. br / With that said, it is undeniable the damage that isolation can cause, its affects are evident nationally and internationally, as war and terror wage on, increasing isolation and fear. There is a great danger in believing that we, as humans, are more different than we are alike. Which is why Im appreciative and admire artists like Billy, who seek to bridge these gaps by showing us, hey, were more alike than we know it!br / Im interested in others thoughts and opinions on traveling to Africa or otherwise. What did you think? What was you experience? And, how has it shaped or changed your perspective about living in the US? Also, any comments from Billy? How was your experience in Mali?br /Peace & blessings,br /Lucybr /br /

Billy's energyWednesday, November 30th 2005 2:18PM

There are many things that fascinate me regarding Billy and his body of work.  I'm intrigued by his historical knowledge, particularly relating to Jewish history, which has sparked me to learn more about it.  And I have been spreading the idea of recycled instruments to the children with whom I work (I'm a speech pathologist).  He really helps us adults! to open up and revisit our inner child.  His music has also reminded me how open children are to new ideas, knowledge and creativity.  I've listened to Billy for many years, having lived in Asheville, and revisiting his music has been a great inspiration!

Just discovered the forumWednesday, November 9th 2005 1:05PM

While checking on Billy's latest gig list (hoping he was again on the list of performers at our Children's Festival...oh darn, he's not), I found the discussion forum. I'd love to bandy-about discussion items. Toss 'em out there! :)
